One of the best prospects in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ system is defenseman Calen Addison. The 19-year old put a major feather in his cap over the past two weeks, helping lead Team Canada to a gold medal in this year’s World Junior Championships.
Addison, a 2018 second round draft pick for Pittsburgh, was good all tournament as Canada’s premiere puck moving defenseman and power play specialist, but he shined today in the gold medal game. As The Hockey News’ Ryan Kennedy pointed out:

Addison also record three assists in today’s game. After Russia went up 3-1 into the game, Addison’s point production began with shooting a puck that hit off a defender and then teammate Connor McMichael’s leg and ended up in the net for a very crucial quick response to make it 3-2.
Addison also created the primary assist for Barrett Hayton to score the game-tying goal for Canada to make it 3-3.
As if that wasn’t enough, Addison gave a pass up the ice that allowed Akil Thomas to work some magic (and to be fair, this was obviously a LOT more about Thomas’ play than Addison here). But hey, 4 minutes left in a tie game, nice play to make by a defenseman by Addison for his third assist in a row that culminated in Team Canada’s gold.
After this three assist game, Addison ended up with nine points (1G+8A) in seven games in this year’s World Juniors tournament. That was enough to lead the star-studded Canadian team in assists, and was tied for third in points as well. It was a great showing for Addison, he got to display his skill, and dish and distribute the puck on the power play.
Pensburgh had Addison as the No. 7 top player under 25 in the Pens’ organization this past summer, and this showcase today will do absolutely nothing to hurt his stock moving forward. He’s small but an extremely skilled puck mover and nifty skater that adds a lot to the offense. This is Addison’s final season in the WHL, he has already signed his entry level contract with Pittsburgh that will start next season in 2020-21.
